Female Hair Loss
Although a typical person sheds between 60 and 100 hairs a day, the natural regrowth of other hair should replace the overall fullness. All hair goes through a cycle of growing and resting.
However, a woman who notices that her hair is significantly thinning is probably suffering from a more excessive hair loss. In these cases, the hair follicles are not regenerating hair strands that have fallen out, or the hair is just becoming thinner.
In general, hair loss in women is very gradual and often cyclical and the pattern of female hair loss differs from that of male pattern baldness.
Female hair loss tends to be more diffuse then mens, spread more generally over the head. The nature of hair loss in women is diagnosed using the Ludwig classification system.
Causes of Female Hair Loss
Hair loss and thinning hair in women is primarily due to inherited genetics. However, there are other potential causes which must be considered, such as:
- hormonal changes
- discontinuation of birth control pills
- sudden changes in diet
- thyroid problems
- stress
Scientific research has suggested that most premenopausal and even more postmenopausal women will experience some degree of diffuse hair thinning as part of the natural aging process.
A medical exam and blood tests may be required for the proper diagnosis of female pattern hair loss.
Depending on the root cause, female hair loss can in many cases be treated and reversed. The earlier the diagnosis the sooner appropriate treatment plans can commence; involving non surgical and surgical female hair loss solutions or else treatment of the cause of hair loss (e.g. diet).
Where appropriate, follicular unit grafting is highly effective on female hair transplant candidates.
