Follicular Unit Extraction
The science of hair transplantation is still evolving as Surgeons at the forefront seek to continuously improve the ways in which they deliver hair restoration results.
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is essentially a method of harvesting donor hair for Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) hair restoration procedures.
Follicular Unit Extraction uses special instrumentation, which offers the Surgeons an alternative to the single strip technique, which is is the most common method for gathering donor hair from the back and sides of the head.
The key advantage of the FUE technique is that it does not leave a linear scar, so the technique may suit the following groups:
- Patients who want to keep their hair very short or shaved or don't mind shaving the donor area for the procedure
- People who do not want a linear scar
- Those whose scalp is too tight for strip harvesting (possibly due to previous transplants)
- Patients who scar easily
- Patients with minimal hair loss
- Younger patients, who only need a small number of hairline grafts
- Someone looking to test the water with a first transplant and/or are also evaluating the effectivenes of medication
- Patients with fine hair
- Transplanting grafts into previous donor scarring
However, there are disadvantages as well as advantages - the pros and cons must be considered carefully.
