A "Preview" of the Finished Hair Transplant
One of the key concerns for hair transplant patients is naturally what it will look like! The Long Hair Technique eliminates this fear of the unknown by giving the patient and Surgeon a "preview" of the finished result on the day of surgery.
In a standard follicular unit transplantation procedure, the donor hair is shaved short prior to grafting and transplanting. However, in the long hair transplant, it is left the same length as the hair would be in the zone being transplanted.
The length of grafts makes the surgical procedure more intricate and labour-intensive on a number of levels, including preparing the donor area, removing the strip, graft preparation, recipient site incisions and placement of the individual grafts.
However, the key benefit is that a patient can actually see his/her hair transplant design taking shape during the procedure.
For the Surgeon, The Long Hair Technique gives clear visibility of the artistic element of hair transplant design during the surgery, enabling scrutiny of each follicle to see the characteristics of the growing hair and deciding where best to place it.
The technique also means that the surgeon and patient can discuss the progress of the transplant as it happens, understanding the optimum balance between "density" over a small area or "coverage" over a larger area.
Although the long hair grafts give a preview of their final result at the conclusion of their surgery, relieving some of the anxiety of the standard waiting period (4-6 months) as the transplanted hair begins to grow out, the long hairs will still shed, rest and replace themselves after several weeks. The new hair growth will follow the same pattern and design as seen on transplant day and then continue to grow for life.
